This article discusses a longitudinal study of a Japanese firm operating in America. This company practices the contingency approach to management in action. It first developed a "sandwiched" organization, then modified it to a "team management" setup, and then further modified it to a "multilayered sandwich" organization. This has been done in the firm's effort to cope successfully with the cultural barriers it faced during the past decade of operating its business in America.
