Technology is often not a full partner in the development of the business strategy. When this occurs neither the business nor the technological contribution is optimized. The experience of successful companies shows that there are four key steps to creating a partnership between technology and strategy: defining the key technological strengths, understanding what technology contributes to success in the marketplace, coordinating business goals and technological implications, and ensuring that all the elements of the organization support the strategy. This framework has been successfully applied to a wide range of organizations, both large and small, in a variety of industries.
